The Association of Journalists of Macedonia (AJM) condemns the use of sweeping and discrediting qualifications directed at media outlets, newsrooms, and journalists, especially when they are disseminated in a sensitive political and social context and may contribute to further polarization in the public sphere.

This reaction follows public appearances in a podcast from Bulgaria, as well as subsequent media publications in the Macedonian language, in which serious negative qualifications were expressed regarding the editorial policy of the national television channel Kanal 5. In the past period, AJM has communicated with the editorial team of this media outlet regarding such public discourse, which is why it is important to highlight several principles that apply to all media and newsrooms.

AJM reminds that public criticism of the media is an integral part of a democratic media environment. Every media outlet may be subject to public and professional debate, especially when it concerns issues of public interest. However, in a sensitive social and political context, it is important that such criticism is expressed carefully, with clear arguments and in respect of professional and ethical standards, so that public communication does not turn into labeling or additional pressure on journalists.

This is particularly important when public discourse relates to issues that touch upon interethnic relations, relations between communities, or relations between states. In such situations, the media, as well as participants in public debate, should act as factors of stability, informed understanding, and mutual respect, rather than as triggers for new divisions, stigmatization, or political misuse.

AJM reminds that for remarks related to specific reporting or non-compliance with professional and ethical standards by any media outlet in the country, there are established and credible mechanisms of media self-regulation. Such issues can be reviewed by the Court of Honor within AJM and by the Council of Media Ethics of Macedonia (CMEM), where a professional, impartial, and well-argued assessment is ensured.

Therefore, AJM calls on all journalists, editors, commentators, public figures, and participants in the media discourse to act responsibly, to avoid labeling, and to contribute to public communication based on facts, professional standards, and respect for the dignity of journalists and newsrooms.
