SafeJournalists: A Regional Response to Threats Against Journalists

The Association of Journalists of Macedonia (AJM), as part of the regional SafeJournalists Network, is participating in a joint visit to Brussels, together with partner journalists’ associations from the Western Balkans and Croatia, coordinated by the European Federation of Journalists (EFJ).

As part of the visit, meetings were held with Members of the European Parliament and representatives of the European Commission responsible for freedom of expression and media policies. A meeting was also held with European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, during which Dragan Sekulovski, Executive Director of AJM, represented the SafeJournalists Network.

“Ensuring the continuity and further development of the regional mechanism for the safety of journalists is crucial for media freedom in the Western Balkans. This mechanism enables the timely identification and documentation of threats, provides credible data and facilitates faster responses, while cross-border threats and gender-specific risks faced by journalists continue to increase,” said Sekulovski.
SafeJournalists.net is a regional platform and network that monitors and documents attacks and threats against journalists, providing early warning, visibility, and clear information for institutions and the public. The platform is particularly important because a significant share of threats today occur online, are often coordinated, and can have an impact beyond the borders of a single country. This makes a joint regional approach essential.
