New Code of Ethics Initiative

Recognizing the need to adopt a new code of ethics, the Association of Journalists of Macedonia (AJM), the Council for Ethics in the Media (SEMM), and the Macedonian Media Institute (MIM) started the implementation of a project entitled “Strengthening journalistic standards – digital advances and impact on the media environment” with the support of IREX.
Within the framework of the project, which will be implemented in two phases, several activities are planned, among which are: the formation of a working group with representatives of the stakeholders, a thorough review of the current practices for ethics in domestic journalism, workshops and meetings with journalists and representatives of the media, comparative analysis and development of a new code of ethics, technical and expert support for self-regulation bodies at AJM and SEMM.
The project’s ultimate goal is to involve journalists and media who want to contribute to improving ethical standards. Events involving journalists, editors, and media owners will follow this initiative, with the aim of developing a new code of ethics that will replace the existing standards from 2001, enabling better compliance with modern challenges and practices. The media community should strive for this new code to be widely supported, thus ensuring its effective application and long-term sustainability.
Through this process, the media in Macedonia will receive clearer and more relevant guidelines for ethical reporting, which will strengthen public credibility and trust in the media industry.
Several activities have been carried out so far, including the formation of a working group composed of distinguished media professionals, which will have the task of providing expert guidance and support to the partners in the project.
