Journalists Have a Responsibility to Report Professionally and Ethically in Sensitive Situations

The Association of Journalists of Macedonia (AJM) and the Council of Media Ethics of Macedonia (CMEM) call on journalists and media workers to adhere to the Journalists’ Code of Ethics, particularly in light of recent events that have sparked public debate and reactions. In such situations, where the risk of national intolerance and hatred increases, journalists have a duty to report objectively, professionally, and with a clear intent to promote calmness and understanding.
Journalists should refrain from using nationalist rhetoric or sensationalism that could further escalate public tensions. Instead, they should focus on raising awareness about the consequences of hate speech and promoting dialogue and respect for diversity. Media outlets, including their management and owners, play a crucial role in fostering tolerance and mutual understanding in society.
When covering sensitive issues such as national symbols, journalists are reminded to prioritize factual reporting and avoid spreading speculation or biased opinions. Editorial decisions in such moments should be guided by the principles of responsible journalism, with the primary goal of preserving the public interest and preventing further societal polarization.
Additionally, we urge journalists to exercise caution in their communication on personal social media profiles, as they are often perceived as public figures and media professionals in those spaces as well. Responsible behavior across all platforms is an essential part of their professional role and aligns with the principles outlined in the Code of Ethics.
AJM and CMEM appeal to media professionals to remain committed to ethical standards and recognize their pivotal role in creating an informative and inclusive media environment.
