According to UNESCO’s 2022 report on the safety of journalists, the global impunity rate for killing journalists remains high at 86%, which has a chilling effect on press freedom, independent journalism, and investigative reporting. Murders of journalists are the most brutal form of silencing, but physical attacks ranging from physical assaults to online violence, (gender) misinformation, and surveillance by state and non-state actors are not left out, there is often a widespread lack of justice and high rates of impunity, which leads to more violence and the inability of journalists to do their jobs safely.
