When Public Officials Become Anonymous: A Challenge to Media Freedom

The public statement by the acting director of the University Clinic for Respiratory Diseases in Children “Kozle” Dr. Karolina Simonovska, prohibiting the mention of her name, is a form of public pressure directed at the media.
Such statements are direct censorship of journalists and undermine the freedom of expression and independence of the media. We remind all public office holders that, if they have any comments about published media content, they can always request a correction or denial.
They also have access to media self-regulation bodies, which assess the ethics and professionalism of media content.
This form of public statements is unacceptable because it creates an atmosphere of intimidation and distrust, which is contrary to democratic values and the public interest.
